SUMMER STORM

TESTO IN INGLESE – PRESENTATION BY QUIRINO MARTELLINI - The artist we are presenting, an Italian American born in Los Angeles, has made rather rare appearances on the Rome art exhibit scene. Indeed, her most recent was in 2014, when she participated with our organisation, I.S. Idea Service, in the Primo Festival internazionale d’Arte, organised by us at the Agostiniana Museum Complex in Piazza del Popolo from 20 to 26 November 2014. This was a one-week collective exhibition featuring the works of about sixty painters, sculptors and photographers, a number of whom addressed the topic of “Le Memorie di Roma” (Memories of Rome), competing for the prize by that name connected with the exhibition. The artist Castagna was among these and gave us the opportunity to appreciate her full mastery of both pictorial and photographic techniques alike. We immediately realised that she possesses an uncommon talent and versatility; she has worked with watercolour, acrylics, pastels, engraving, gouache, pen and pencil drawing, charcoal, black-and-white and colour photography. And her talent as a portrait artist is quite extraordinary! And her palette of subjects is astonishing! They range from landscapes to portraits, to society trends, still life, everyday objects and consumer goods. The discerning eye can detect the mood of a Roman sky as bizzarre and carefree flocks of birds circle above some of the more intriguing corners of the Eternal City. With just a few, well-placed strokes, our artist reveals the soul behind a photo or a drawing. Of a reserved and delicate disposition, she stands out for her sensitive and discreet nature, the “soft” approach with which she manages her public relations, and the self-possessed pace with which she addresses the artistic themes that the world around her suggests. An artist reminiscent of another age, who constantly searches for the beauty and even the comic side of reality, at a time when misery and ruin are all too vulgarly forced upon us. Diana, in her own unique way, sheds a light on space and time, delighting our senses with her “minimalist creations” and stirring reflection within our inner selves on the fragility and transience of our existence.

TESTO IN INGLESE – INTRODUCTION BY CORRADO VENEZIANO - Diana Castagna has the complex and dual view of the artist - the ability to see things from afar, with objective detachment, to put things into perspective, to give a sense to spatial dimensions, yet at the same time to take a look from close-up - revealing the minutest details, the most delicate and fleeting nuances, the very grain of the subjects she depicts in her paintings. Diana has the artist’s deep and sincere sensitivity, a discreet seclusion that lends expression to the solitary workings of her creative experience and, at the same time, the ability not to refrain from excess and redundancy, as if, once the object to be drawn has been captured, she experiences a “technological pleasure” through serial repetition. Diana has the courage of the artist who experiments with different codes, figures and styles - a versatility that rests on technical mastery, enabling her to ply her skills in seemingly opposite images - from popular portraitry to “abstract” and magmatic oils, from photography to works in clay or T-shirts mounted on coloured hangers. Diana Castagna has a local and international outlook, which is both sentimentally rooted in the Roman milieu - just look at the vivid portrait of Trilussa - and in a pronounced “testimony” of the years spent in the United States, with figures and references to the art of Warhol, or to the natural process of putting herself on the line by exhibiting her “playful visual projections” - stop for a moment to consider the face of the journalist Giuliano Ferrara, which is depicted in all its most plastic and expressive facets. And perhaps it is just this - this “movement” - that points to the common denominator of so proudly a diversified set of works; a series of dynamic forces that immortalise the “instant” as it comes into existence and which, once it has taken a final shape, though set seems unable to settle: an unquenched will that only the most humble - and genuine - artists have the power to express. Diana Castagna, therefore, is a true artist.
